YES • TRAIN FIRST, REGISTER WHEN HIRED

Can You Take Level II Without an Employer?

Yes. Nothing in the Level II course requires you to already have a guard job. You can enroll, study, pass the exam, and hold your PSP-36 certificate before any employer hires you. The employer enters the picture at the registration step — your DPS registration is completed together with a licensed security company — not at the training step.

Train First, Register When Hired

  1. Enroll and finish the course ($55). 11 modules, 100% online, self-paced. No employer information is needed to enroll.
  2. Pass the exam (75%+) and keep your PSP-36. The certificate is emailed to you automatically. It is your proof of training, and it does not expire on a schedule the school sets.
  3. Apply for jobs with training already done. Employers hiring guards ask for the same first credential. Arriving with your PSP-36 in hand makes you hirable on the spot.
  4. Complete registration with your employer. When hired, you and your licensed employer complete your DPS registration in TOPS together. DPS then issues your pocket card after fingerprinting and background review.

If You Already Work for a Guard Company

The same course applies — your employer simply completes the registration step with you. Some employers pay for training or reimburse tuition; that is between you and your employer, not a DPS rule.

Common Questions

Will DPS reject my training if I trained before being hired?
No. Training and registration are separate steps. DPS accepts a valid PSP-36 from a DPS-approved school regardless of when you trained relative to being hired.

Can I work while my registration is pending?
No. You may work once DPS issues your pocket card and your registration is tied to your employer. The certificate alone is not a license to work.

Do I need a sponsor to enroll at MLG?
No. Enrollment at MLG needs only your registration details and payment. No sponsor, no employer letter, no referral.
