How to Become a Security Guard in Texas
Becoming a licensed security guard in Texas follows the same path for everyone: training first, then a state application. You must be at least 18 years old, complete a Texas DPS-approved Level II course, pass the exam, and register with DPS through a licensed security company. At MLG, the whole training half is online, costs $55 flat, and ends with your DPS PSP-36 certificate by email.
The Steps, in Order
- Check you are eligible. You must be at least 18, and DPS runs a fingerprint background check on every applicant (Texas Occupations Code §1702.282). If anything in your record gives you pause, call the school at (956) 583-2004 before you enroll.
- Enroll online ($55). Pay by card and your classroom opens immediately — the Participant Guide is attached to your enrollment email.
- Finish the 11 modules. Six hours of DPS Level II curriculum, self-paced and in order. The narration must play through each slide before the next unlocks.
- Pass the final exam (75%+). Your PSP-36 certificate of completion is generated and emailed to you automatically.
- Apply with Texas DPS in TOPS. Your registration is completed together with a licensed security company employer. DPS charges its own application and fingerprint fees separately when you apply.
- Get fingerprinted and wait for review. DPS issues your pocket card after fingerprinting and background review. You work for the employer shown on your DPS record.
How Long Does the Whole Path Take?
The training itself is self-paced — most students finish in one or two sittings. The state side (TOPS application, fingerprinting, DPS review, pocket card) runs on DPS's timeline, not the school's, so no honest school can promise a card by a particular date. What MLG controls is the training: enroll today, and your classroom is open today.
Common Questions
Do I need a guard job before I take Level II?
No. You can take the course and exam before you have an employer. Your DPS registration is completed together with a licensed employer when you are hired.
Is Level II the first license?
Yes. Level II (non-commissioned, unarmed) is the entry license every Texas security officer holds first. The armed Level III license builds on it.
Do I ever have to travel to Mission?
No. Level II at MLG is 100% online — modules, exam, and certificate. The school is in Mission, TX, and you are welcome, but the course never requires the trip.
