What Happens After You Pass Level II?

Passing the Level II exam is the end of training and the start of the state half of licensing. The moment you pass, MLG emails your PSP-36 certificate of completion automatically. From there, the path runs through DPS: an application in TOPS, fingerprinting, a background review, and finally the pocket card you carry on duty.

The Steps After Passing

  1. Receive your PSP-36. The certificate is generated and emailed to you automatically when you pass. Keep a copy — it is your proof of training.
  2. Apply in TOPS. Texas Online Private Security is DPS's application system. Your registration is completed together with a licensed security company employer.
  3. Get fingerprinted. DPS requires fingerprints with the application, and runs a criminal history check including FBI records (Texas Occupations Code §1702.282).
  4. Wait for DPS review. DPS reviews your application and background check, then issues your pocket card. Your license expiration date is printed on the card.
  5. Work for your employer of record. Your registration is tied to the employer shown in DPS records. If you change employers, update your DPS registration.

Can You Work With Just the Certificate?

No. The PSP-36 is training proof, not a license to work. You may work as a guard once DPS issues your pocket card and your registration is tied to your employer. Working before that point is working unlicensed, and it puts both you and the employer at risk.

What Comes Next in Your Career?

Level II is the unarmed license. If you want armed work, Level III (commissioned) is the next step: it builds on Level II with 30 hours of classroom plus 10–15 hours of handgun proficiency, self-defense, and range qualification. MLG offers Level III theory online and the full Level III package with in-person skills and range time.

Common Questions

How soon after passing can I apply in TOPS?
Immediately. Your PSP-36 is emailed the moment you pass, and nothing requires a waiting period before you apply.

Does MLG submit my DPS application for me?
No. Your TOPS application is yours, completed together with your licensed employer. The school provides the training and the certificate; DPS handles registration.

What if my application is delayed?
DPS review time is the state's, not the school's. If DPS asks for additional records, respond promptly — an incomplete application waits on you, not on DPS.
