How Long Is a Texas Guard License Good For? How Do You Renew?
A new Texas individual license — your guard pocket card — expires 2 years from the date it is issued. That expiration date is printed on the card itself, so you never have to guess. Renewal runs through TOPS, the same DPS system you applied in, and it can be done online.
The Renewal Rules (Texas DPS)
- First license: 2 years from issuance. Applicants new to private security receive a license expiring 2 years from the date of issuance. Later licenses align with your existing license's expiration in the same category (all unarmed licenses together, all armed licenses together).
- Renewal window: 180 days before to 1 year after. You can renew online 180 days before the expiration date, and up to one year after expiration — late fees apply once the license is expired.
- Expired more than one year? Renewal is no longer available. You must submit an original application, as if you were a new applicant.
- Who can pay: either you or your affiliated employer can submit payment, with an employer-pay option at the end of the application.
A Note for Armed Officers
Commissioned security officers renewing must submit a firearms proficiency certificate that is no more than 90 days old. That requirement is specific to armed renewals; it does not apply to an unarmed Level II renewal.
Do Not Let It Lapse
You cannot legally work as a guard on an expired license, and a lapse past one year means starting over with an original application. Put the expiration date from your pocket card in your calendar the day the card arrives, and renew inside the 180-day window.
Common Questions
Where do I renew?
In TOPS, the Texas Online Private Security system, the same system your original application went through. Sign in, select renew, and choose which license or licenses to renew.
Does renewal require retaking Level II?
No. Renewal of an unarmed license does not require retaking the Level II course. Renewal is an application, fee, and — for armed officers — a current firearms proficiency certificate.
What if I changed employers since my license was issued?
Complete the employee license update (affiliation with your new employer) before submitting the renewal, so the renewal attaches to the right employer.
